Frequently Asked Questions

Custom Book Printing Explained
  • What’s the difference between POD and traditional printing?

Print-on-demand (POD) prints copies only as orders come in, minimizing upfront costs and inventory. Traditional (offset) printing requires a larger initial print run but lowers the cost per copy. POD offers flexibility; traditional printing is better for large quantities.
  • What book sizes can I choose from when printing with Spines?

Spines offers 16 paperback trim sizes and 5 hardcover sizes, including standard dimensions like 5" x 8", 6" x 9", and larger options like 8.5" x 11". Custom sizes may also be available for paperback. All printed copies must be the same size; you cannot print the same book in different sizes for paperback and hardcover.
  • What is the minimum and maximum page count for printed books?

For Amazon, paperbacks must be between 24–828 pages and hardcovers between 76–550 pages. For Lightning Source (LSI), the range is 20–1200 pages for both formats. Books under 24 pages cannot be published on Amazon and may need to be expanded with content or images.
  • Can I choose color printing for my book?

Yes. Spines offers multiple ink and paper combinations, including black ink on white or cream paper, standard color on white paper, and premium color on white paper. The available options vary depending on the selected trim size and format.
  • Can I print both paperback and hardcover versions of my book?

Yes, if you're on the Signature or Paramount plan, you can print both paperback and hardcover editions. Note that hardcovers must meet specific requirements: a minimum of 75 pages, specific trim sizes, and margin settings to comply with distribution platforms like Amazon.
